New Members Join the Scientific Advisory Committee

The October Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting in Glasgow marked the arrival of three new members: Thomas Meinertz, MD; Stephen O’Rahilly, MD; and Robert Roberts, MD.

Dr. Meinertz has been Director of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the University Heart Center in Hamburg since 1994.With broad clinical and research interests, he has published extensively in areas including clinical cardiology, cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and cardiac imaging. Dr. Meinertz was awarded the Deutschen Therapiewoche Prize in 1980 and the Fraenkel Prize of the German Society for Heart and Cardiovascular Research in 1984. He is the editor of several German cardiology texts and also serves on the editorial boards of many journals, including Circulation. His leadership positions have included President of the German Cardiac Society and a member of the board of the German Heart Foundation.

Dr. O’Rahilly is the Director of the Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratory at Addenbrooke’s Hospital of the University of Cambridge, where he is Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine. He is a former Scientific Editor of the Journal of Endocrinology and a founding editor of Cell Metabolism. Dr. O’Rahilly’s work in obesity and diabetes encompasses human studies to identify naturally occurring genetic mutations that predispose individuals to these conditions, as well as cellular and animal studies to determine the mechanisms by which such mutations disrupt metabolism and eating behavior. As Dr. O’Rahilly explains, “I am deeply honoured to have been invited to become a member of Scientific Advisory Committee of the Fondation Leducq. My personal area of expertise is in obesity and diabetes, disorders which play a major role in the development of atherosclerosis. I am delighted that the Foundation has recognised the importance of these common metabolic disorders as a major root of much of humanity's burden of cardiovascular disease and look forward to helping the Foundation in addressing this previously relatively neglected area."

Dr. Roberts is the President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Canada’s largest cardiovascular health center. He is also Professor of Medicine and Director at the Ruddy Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Centre, which he founded in 2005. An expert in genetics and molecular cardiology, Dr. Roberts has conducted groundbreaking research on creatine kinase (CK-MB), a key diagnostic marker for cardiac injury. Dr. Roberts received the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology in 1998 and the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association in 2001. After the SAC meeting, Dr. Roberts remarked, “As a first time participant, I was very impressed with the process and the diversity of world renowned expertise provided by the panel of reviewers. It was an informative and stimulating experience. I look forward to pursuing the responsibilities as a member of the SAC.
